Forty to sixty percent of bacteria rests between the teeth and gums. Often times these areas become inflamed, resulting in bone loss, recession of gums and potential loss of teeth. These areas of inflammation require additional treatment. This treatment is preformed by the hygienist, and is referred to as scaling and root planning. Scaling and root planning rids the mouth of debris but does not remove all of the bacteria that lies in the sulcus (pockets around the teeth). Now, our practice offers a diode laser treatment that can disinfect these pockets and reduce swelling non-surgically. This laser not only treats periodontal disease in the mouth, it also treats cold and canker sores painlessly.
